1848 conducted Karl Ellenberger and his partner, Carl August Ziener an idea to manufacture pipes in Germany. The very first pipfabriken producing pipes from selected woods for connoisseurs worldwide was thus grounded in Nurnberg.

  The Vereinigte Pfeifenfabriken in Nuremberg (known as VPFN) was founded in 1901 through a merger with Gebhard Ott's pipfabrik which started in 1866, also in Nuremberg.

Ernst Eckerts son, Adolf Eckert coined a new name for the business in 1909. VAUEN, consisting of the initial letters V (pronounced VAU) from Vereinigte Pfeifenfabriken and N (pronounced EN) of Nuremberg. A trademark for the future had been created. And still today very much active.

In 1911 Adolf Eckert began noticing the flute quality with a white dot on the mouthpiece that hallmark. Meanwhile, the "White Dot" has become a brand that is known worldwide. This White Dot guarantees a special selection of materials and the highest standards of craftsmanship. This mark is still there, in our finest barrels.
